What "kills" creativity?
Over the ages people have given alot of answers, well i'm here to tell you a little story and by the end you will probably join the people who have given a lot of answers . Lol
My family is a very funny one . . .
I'm home right now with mumsy and popsy, just the three of us, and recently mumsy had to go visit my snr sister and her family to do some Grandma ish, which is cool . . .and yeah mumsy's mum is alive and strong, which makes us a 4 generation family alive and running, shows d blessings of the Lord.
So she went, lil sis is there too so it was a no brainier, two birds with one stone. Now, it is cool (with lower case letters all through) staying home with pops but the not SO COOL part of it is dat you get to assume the "wifey" roll with the cooking.
Now initially, you get creative: you know stuff like boiled yam with sliced boiled eggs and stock fish infused vegetable sauce and a huge lump of smoked catfish, Stuff like that.
The proverbial "chicken peri peri".
But then at some point when you remember that you're the one to prepare the food, you loose all creativity and say to yourself, "beans!, beans will do."
"Every one needs a balanced diet or we have not had enough protein lately" . . .
At this point You start to think, " ah, if mumsy was here".
You begin to appreciate her efforts a little more, because when she was around and she asked, "What do u think we should eat today? Maybe beans?" And we would say, "Oh no, not beans" and we went ahead to suggest a meal and OMG was our creativity top notch, I mean, on a very unceremonious Tuesday afternoon in the middle of July, one of us could say stuff like, fried rice and salad with fried meat..
And most of the time, she prepared it, wow looking back now that was really impressive.
Now most of you have not met my mum but she is an awesome woman and I'll give yuo a taste of her awesomeness . . .
So at some point she must have thought to herself mehn these children's demands are becoming outrageous what do I do? So she came up with the most Ingenious solution, next time she asked, " what do you guys think we should eat today?" as usual exotic foods were mentioned and we finally agreed on something like pounded yam and nsala soup with fresh fish and periwinkles.
The next thing she said was, "hmm . . . C (that's me) you peel d yam, set it to boil, wash d mortar and prepare to pound, J ( my elder sis) you get d fish, remove d scales, gut it, cut it up and prepare it for cooking . . . at first we didn't get d full picture, we just did as we where told but then as we grew older we understood.
We suggest the food, we did the cooking (at least most of it) though this translated to us being pretty good cooks which I must say is good home training.
At some point when mumsy asks, "so what do you guys think we should eat" the funny answer became "Beans!! Beans will do, we all need protein". lol, and like so, she turned d tables around on us, now she let her mind run wild suggesting exotic meals, she'll say, "I was thinking something like coconut rice and chicken sauce" and we would say, "No no no no no, beans will do or maybe yam, yam and oil!!! We haven't had dat in a while, variety is d spice of life, u know?". My family is a funny one, won't you agree?
So now one of the most difficult things is not preparing your meal but figuring out what to prepare, you have to balance your appetite with your strength and time and off course consider what has been eaten before and what should be eaten later, where did all that creativity go?, now you probably can see why you can't pick mums on the streets. . .
So with this short story I have told, hope you have figured out your answers to the question, what "kills" creativity?

Nice one chizzy!
I Love it!
What kills creativity is probably Laziness.... Or that fear for being responsible for some thing. .
Thats what i understood.
Omg i love this article.
Beans will do! (Settling for less.. staying in comfort zone ( too many rhemas on this one
Such an honour to be published on Ije, I feel like a thousand chimamanda adichie's, This is the first time am being featured as a writer.
DeleteThanks Chommy!! 😘
A thousand Chimamanda?? Lool. You are welcome. 😀
DeleteI agree with you. What kills creativity nowadays is laziness. We know what we want, we do not want to go through the gruesome task of getting it done and also we have the fear of it not coming out the way we envisaged. This, then leads us to the settlement mentality. I'm using myself as an example. And will use the food aspect you gave us too.
ReplyDeleteI might perceive ora soup my favorite and go "oh I would love to coom it right now, erm what do I have and what do I have to buy? " "damn, I'll have to go to the market, prepare the stock, the leaves etc"
Indomie will do. After all, I just ate it yesterday, 2 days ago, 3 days ago too, lol.
We also do this in our life choices and decisions and options. What's the easy way out? Even in our relationships.
Humph! It never ends. The question still remains, how do we come out of "settlement mentality" or perhaps "EWO- Easy Way Out"?
Looool. Preshy! There should be a whole new post on this your comment with the name EWO. 😂😂😂😂 You killed me at indomie. Well done preshy please. Having you here is an amazing something.
